You Have the Right to Receive a Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges

Under the federal No Surprises Act, health care providers are required to give clients who do not have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

Ten Directions Counseling is a private-pay practice. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of counseling services before you begin care.

What Your Good Faith Estimate Includes

  • The expected charges for the services you are scheduled to receive, such as the per-session fee for psychotherapy. [Confirm current fee schedule for individualized estimates.]
  • An estimate of expected charges for ongoing services, such as a course of counseling sessions, where applicable.
  • An itemized list of the services reasonably expected to be furnished.

Because the length of care varies by person, ongoing estimates are typically provided for a defined period and updated as your care continues.

When You Will Receive It

You may ask for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, and one will be provided in writing at least one business day before your first scheduled session. You can also ask for an estimate at any point during care.

If Your Bill Is Higher Than Your Estimate

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Keep a Copy

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate alongside your records.
